REGISTER - Objectives
This Register was drawn up in 1995 and is the formal and written presentation of European Union's Engineers represented by CLAIU-EU, with their academic and professional formation.

This document was prepared to acquaint the Commission with CLAIU’s initiative to contribute significantly towards the free movement of professional engineers, who are citizens of the European Union, and especially within the terms of the Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications of 7th September 2005.

Engineers, citizens of the European Union, are enrolled free of charge in the CLAIU-EU Register, provided that they can meet the following conditions:

A. Holder of academic title or qualification certificate:
  • an academic title issued in a country of the European Union after scientific studies of long duration, I.e. generally 5 years (or a minimum of 4 years if this is the highest study at the Master level) and awarded by a university or higher school of engineering in the European Union listed per member country, or
  • a qualification certificate or a professional certificate recognized as the highest level in the country of origin or of residence, on the condition that the academic title corresponding to the level under A.1. is not a professional qualification title.

B. To be enrolled in a Body or an Association, legally representative in the country of origin or of residence, the holders of the diplomas relevant to point A or generally recognized as representing the mentioned engineers in the countries where the membership of an association is not a prerequisite to practise.

CLAIU-EU recommends that the adaptation measures, provided by the Directive on professional qualifications which applies for the engineering profession, also do not apply to the professionals enrolled in this Register when examining an application for professional qualification recognition, by virtue of the Directive at issue.

Engineers meeting the conditions mentioned above can request a certificate from their professional association, being a member of CLAIU-EU, in order to have this information confirmed.
